Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner has joined the ownership group of Canadian organization OverActive Media.
OverActive Media are owners of MAD Lions, the European League of Legends team and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team. They also own Toronto Defiant in the Overwatch League and Toronto Ultra in the Call of Duty League. The “investor relationship” with Marner will see him become an important member of OverActive Media. He'll be the “latest ambassador and an important part of OverActive’s brand-building efforts.”
Chris Overholt, CEO and President of OverActive Media spoke in a press release:
"With roots in the city of Toronto, our entire organization is thrilled to welcome a hometown hero and hockey superstar like Mitch Marner to our investor family. Mitch's authenticity within the Call of Duty scene and his interest in growing the esports industry will be such great additions to our fanbase and to each of our franchises."
Marner commented on the development too:
“As a gamer, my investment is an opportunity to join one of the best global esports organizations and to help bridge the gap between hockey fans and esports. I’m looking forward to working with the players and the front office to introduce the Toronto Ultra and Toronto Defiant to a young audience of traditional sports fans."
Marner becomes another name in a list of traditional sports players to invest in an esports organization. Crucially, he already has a relationship with players from OverActive’s Toronto based Call of Duty League franchise. As such, he will become more involved and hands-on with their brand-building efforts.
In this unprecedented time, esports is making its presence more known. As a result, the links between esports and traditional sports are consistently growing stronger. Marner's joining of OverActive Media shows just how enticing this general cooperation is now.
